Pushkin and His Works
- Born on June 6, 1799
- Wrote his frist poem at age 15, titled "Recollections of Tsarskoye Selo"
- His style has rythmic patterns that can be very difficult to translate
- Used his writing as a way of expressing the suppression of the Russian people
- His 130 poems written between 1814 and 1817 caused him to be exiled because of political views
- His writing includes irony and humor
- Considered the father of Russian literature
- After 1830, he started writing short stories
- Pushkin died in 1837
- At the time of his death, he was in debt
So why did he start writing?
- He wanted to capture what it meant to be a Russian using his skeptical mind and sense of irony
- At school, the only subjects he liked were French and Russian literature
- His salary was small and his family would not support him, so he started writing to make money

- He found inspiration in the not-so-admirable behavior of the bourgeoisie which are the subject of his pessimism (the bourgeoisie is the middle class, who own's most of the wealth in society)
- His expierence in war provided the setting for many of his stories

- Yasnaya Polyana, the home and burial place of Leo Tolstoy is located here
- He wrote some of his most famous works while in Yasnaya Polyana

· During his time fighting in the Crimean war, he wrote an autobiography, called "Childhood"
· He also wrote the sequel to his "Childhood", called "Boyhood", and the final book of the trilogy, "Youth"
· Died on November 20, 1910, and was buried at the family estate

The three books that made him most famous are Anna Karenina, Ivan Ilych, and War and Peace.
So why did he start writing?
- When he was 2, his mother died, 7 years later, his father died. He moved in with his aunt, but then she died.
- Expierencing much loss at a young age, he would write about his childhood later.
- Wasn't a successful farmer, but he kept a diary which would inspire his fiction works

- Chekhov's father owned a grocery store, so he used to sit in it and watch the people.
- They would talk about their hopes, complaints, and gossip.
- He learned how to observe the lives of humans. Learning how to listen to people would be a crutial skill in his story telling.
- When Anton's father was no longer working, the family needed money, so Anton turned to writing.
- He wrote for local newspapers and journals.
